. . . For an instant, the guard forgot what he was doing and perhaps also his own name.  Her wide green eyes sometimes had this effect on members of the mightier sex.  Of course she knew there was much more to it than just the eyes and the unflinching gaze.  As she was always fond of telling people, she had “the perfect face”. 
People often looked at her strangely when she said this, caught up in a confusing mixture that it might be true and also that she must be incredibly vain.  Her explanation was simply an artistic one.  She had read all about the subject in how-to-draw books.  If you made an ovular sphere and drew perpendicular lines through it, the most attractive people would have eyes equally spaced, neither too far apart nor too close together, not too high above the nose and never barbaric at the base of the forehead.
The nose, the lips, the cheekbones – all required a balance of discretion and at the same time a distinction that showed admiration of the individual parts.  Possess these, Sarah would explain by rote, and you have the perfect face . . .
